Obituary of David Russell Cain

Please share a memory of David to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

David Russell Cain, 66, of Roanoke, VA, passed into Heaven on Monday, July 5, 2021, after a hard fought battle with cancer.

David was born on September 21, 1954 in Marlinton, WV, to Edsel Lee and Clara Pauline Cain, both now deceased. He had one brother, Johnny Lee Cain, who is also deceased.

David is survived by his wife of 41 years, Marla Dean Chestnut Cain; three sons, Corey Russell Cain of Roanoke, VA, Brandon David Cain of Roanoke, VA, and  Devin Edward Cain of El Paso, TX; one grandson whom he loved and adored, Aiden Benjamin Cain of Roanoke, VA; and one nephew, Jared Lee Cain (Mary) of Jacksonville, FL.

David was a retired welder. He was an exceptional athlete in his youth, and played football for West Virginia University (under Coach Bobby Bowden). His love of sports led him to coach youth Rec League Football for thirty years. He devoted his life to his family and work and never hesitated to help a friend in need.

David chose to be cremated with no funeral service. His ashes will be spread in his beloved mountains of West Virginia.

The family would like to thank Simpson Funeral Home and all the family, friends, and coworkers who visited, called, and sent cards during his illness. It kept him going. A special thanks to Becky Brooks, sister-in-law, for being a constant support and Charles "Buck" Moore for setting up the reunion with the "A's". It was the best day David had during his illness.

Per David's request, donations in his memory may be made to Duke Cancer Research Center or a cancer organization of your choice. Arrangements by Simpson Funeral Home.
