Obituary of William C. Waddell Jr.

William C. Waddell Jr., (Bill) of Roanoke passed away on April 28, 2021 at Lewis Gale Hospital.  He was born February 25, 1934, in Marion, VA, the son of William C. Waddell and Virginia Dare.

Bill graduated from Christiansburg High School in 1954, having previously attended Fork Union Military Academy. He married Lois Lee King; they celebrated 67 years of marriage on April 24.

Bill, and his brother Jack, owned and operated Waddell Brothers Construction Co. Later, Bill worked as Superintendent at VDOT, where he retired.  Bill served in the Army National Guard. He enjoyed coaching in the youth leagues of North Roanoke County. Bill and Lois enjoyed square dancing for over 20 years.

Bill was a devout member of Northminster Presbyterian Church, where he taught Sunday School, prepared the men’s breakfast with Bill Bryan, served as a Deacon and Elder and a member of his beloved choir. He attended the Pilgrimage and encouraged its ministry. Throughout his life, he was an active member of Masonic Lodges until finally serving  as a Master of the Boone Masonic Lodge. No. 247.

In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by his sister, Jean Crigger.

Surviving Bill are his wife, Lois, his brother Jack Waddell, sister Lee Gouffrey, both of Roanoke; his son, Chuck Waddell (Gail) of Midlothian, VA, daughters, Cindy Waddell (Diana Reyes) of San Antonio, TX and Mary Waddell (Jim Jones) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; grandchildren, Allison Sadler (Travis) of Gloucester, VA, Kimber Moore of Richmond VA; great granddaughter, Lilah Sadler and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held between 4 and 6 pm Sunday, May 2, at Simpson’s Funeral Home (5160 Peters Creek Rd. Roanoke, VA. 24019).  A service of remembrance will be held 11:00 am Monday, May 3, at Northminster Presbyterian Church (3911 Greenland Ave. NW, Roanoke, VA 24012).  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Northminster Presbyterian Church.
