Bob and I were so saddened to hear of Steve's passing. He had called Bob last year sometime I believe. He had said he would come by when he was flying in the area. Please know that your family will be in our prayers - and please let Jerry know also. Also keep us posted as to when there might be a memorial service. Thank you and God bless!! Bob & Marilyn Holland

Steve and I were neighbors when he lived on Dorman Drive in Portsmouth, Ohio back in the 60"s. In fact, my mother went to Jeri's Beauty Shop for years. I was the neighborhood paperboy back then and got to know the family well including his grandmother who lived across the street. Although Steve was older than I, it does not surprise me at all in his life's accomplishments. He was raised by a loving mother and grandmother. To this day I still remember when he went into the military and then became a police officer in Portsmouth. A very nice and respectable guy back then and obvious continued this fine character throughout his life's journey. My thoughts, prayers and condolences to the family during this most difficult time in your lives. I thank Steve for his military service to this great country. God Bless. Alan Chapman Tennessee

Lexi and all of the family -
I was saddened to learn of Steve's passing.
Besides being Norfolk Southern colleagues, he and I shared a passion for flying, which we discussed many times during his visits to Norfolk headquarters, where he always found time to stop by and say hello.
Steve's was a life well lived. My heartfelt condolences.

I was hired by Norfolk and Western in 1977, in Chicago and had the pleasure of working under Director Hanes. He seemed always to meet with you smile. My fondest memory I had mentioned I was taking my family on vacation to Disney World and also make stop to see Stone Mountain. A few days later I received a package from the Director with tickets for my entire family for both venues, this surprise and his thougtfulness truly showed the type of msn he was. My prayers to the family.

Dear Hanes Family: It was a shock to see Steve's obituary in the newspaper this morning. He was a great railroader (best RR compliment) at Norfolk Southern, where he made countless friends among his fellow employees, including me. His sentiments about his life that were included in the obituary are a good reflection of his character and are very touching to read. Please know that you all will be in my thoughts and prayers in the coming days.

I am so sorry to hear of Steve's passing. We were colleagues at Norfolk Southern. I remember him as great police chief. He was always there to help. I principly knew him in his role in the police department. Then one day I learned of his many and varied interests. He reported to work with two broken legs. "How did that happen", I asked? "I crashed my soaring plane in CrIag County". That is when I learned of his many passions and enormous talents. He will be missed.
To his family, take comfort that you are in the thoughts and prayers of your friends during this time of sorrow.

Lots of love to Patti, Getra and Lexi. I’m heartbroken. Steve was very dear to me, and I was honored to work for him when he led the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police. One thing I noticed back then was the loyalty and devotion of his officers at the Norfolk Southern Police Department. That spoke volumes to his value as a leader and mentor. One of a kind. Miss you, Steve. God bless your family. Dana
