Obituary of Phillip Calvin Smith
Phillip Calvin Smith, 67, of Troutville, VA went to be with our Lord on Sunday, January 10, 2021 after succumbing to the effects of a massive stroke. Phillip was born in Mt. Airy, NC to the late Calvin Smith and the late Barbara Jo Hawks Smith Gray. He moved to Roanoke VA in 1969 with his parents and graduated from Northside High School in 1972. He married his high school sweetheart, Carla Fleming, in 1974.
He loved his church, Glade Creek Baptist Church and his church family where he was active as a deacon, drummer and choir member. He also liked to visit his old home church, Lambsburg Missionary Baptist Church when he could. He was well known as a drummer for many years in this area and he loved his fellow band members as they also loved him. He worked for Wimmer Tire and retired from Lowes after many years of service. Phillip was so blessed to have many friends, some of which were a part of his extended family.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Carla; daughter, Marijo Sensel and three special grandchildren. Surviving family members from Mt. Airy include siblings: Tammy Smith Bowman, Joey Smith, Shannon Smith and Tonya Smith Carpenter, along with multiple aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Other surviving siblings are Ricky Gray and Joanne Gray Goldmark. He is loved by his sister-in-law Carol Fleming Theimer and her husband Robbie and their daughters, Laura, Clara, Teresa and their families.
There will be no visitation or service at this time. His grave will be at his family’s cemetery at Blue Ridge Chapel Missionary Baptist Church off of the Blue Ridge Parkway in the mountains around Mt. Airy.
