Atwood Jackson Huff II, 87, of Roanoke, Va., died on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 following several months of illness.
Atwood was born February 21, 1933 in Marion, Va.
He graduated from Castle Heights Military Academy in 1951 and went on to Virginia Tech earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Dairy Science in 1958. He served in the United State Army during the Korean War in the Army Signal Corp in a top-secret post at Fort Meade, Maryland. He married Mary Anne Atkins of Marion, Va. on February 26, 1955. They moved to Roanoke, Va. in 1959 where Atwood became a Dairy Inspector for the State of Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services ending his career as Supervisor of Production of Milk for the State of Virginia. He was appointed to the State Board of Sanitarian Examiners for a four-year term by Governor John N. Dalton.
Atwood was a former member and officer of the International Association of Milk, Food and Environmental Sanitarians, and the Virginia Fieldman's Association. He retired after 38 years of service. Atwood was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel in 1978 and was a member of the Williamson Road Lions Club and the Roanoke Valley Corvair Club. He served as the President of the Virginia Tech Alumni Club of Roanoke.
Atwood was an accomplished photographer and enjoyed woodworking. Atwood's proudest accomplishment was receiving a United States patent (No. 309,065) for a one leg adjustable table for attachment to an automobile for use at tailgate parties.
Atwood is survived by his wife, Mary Anne of Roanoke, Va., of 65 years; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Atwood Jackson Huff III and wife, Gena Lyn Huff of Jacksonville, Ill.; daughter and son-in-law, Anne Huff and R. Benjamin Mays of Wilmington, Del.; brother and sister-in-law, Frank James and Nancy Ballard Atkins of Salem, Va. His grandchildren include Daniel Benjamin Mays of Granbury, Texas; Laura Anne Bauer (husband, Tanner Michael Bauer) of Granbury, Texas; Emily Lyn Huff of St. Louis, Mo.; and Atwood Jackson Huff IV of Jacksonville, Ill. Atwood's great-grandchildren include Avila Jade and Rilynn Hazel Bauer of Granbury, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret Wassum and Isaac Henry Huff; sister and brother-in-law, Monnie Wassum and James D. Fitzpatrick.
Atwood was an active member in the church throughout his life serving as Elder for Greenridge Presbyterian and Northminster Presbyterian Churches. Atwood was also involved with the Boy Scouts of America for over 40 years.
Due to restrictions on travel and gatherings, a celebration of life will not be held at this time. The family asks that any memorials be directed to the Roanoke Area Ministries – 824 Campbell Ave. SW, Roanoke, VA 24016.
