Charles Ware Sr.

Obituary of Charles Clifton Ware Sr.

Please share a memory of Charles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Charlie was born 100 years ago in the mountains of Bluestone, West Virginia, where he grew up during the Great Depression.  He was a WWII army veteran serving overseas, and a railroader who started as a telegraph operator for Nickel Plate Railroad in Ohio.  He retired 42 years later as a train dispatcher from Norfolk and Western Railroad’s Systems Operations Center in Roanoke, Virginia.  He was an avid, lifelong bowler, winning many trophies and enjoying the camaraderie of his teammates throughout the years.

Charlie was preceded in death by his truly beloved wife of 61 years, Iona; his three brothers, Bill, Stewart and Eddie; and his three sisters, Thirley, Mildred and Edith.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Tim Dawson; daughter, Iona Cheryl Kranz; son and daughter-in-law Charles Jr. and Mary Ware; four grandchildren, Caleb Dawson, Drew Kranz, Charles Ware III (Chip), and Colleen Ware; and six great grandchildren.

Charlie was a kind and devoted husband, father, brother, and son.  He worked quietly his whole life, without fanfare or complaint, taking care of and helping his immediate family, his extended family, and countless others who have crossed his path.  He was a shining example of “The Great Generation” and will be dearly, dearly missed.  Good night, Dad.  We love you.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Alzheimer’s Association.

The family will be having a private Graveside Service in Charlie's memory.
