I met Monte in 1975 at UWM LSS when he was doing his doctorate and I was a newbie physics student. Monte was in charge of me in the lab and he was the best boss that I ever had. I never forgot the long handshake that he gave me when I was off to my first real job after graduation. He never got angry, he guided me and he was a friend. I visited him and his family in Roanoke and in Lake Zurich, long long ago. In fact, I just re-read a book he gave me in Roanoke, "Rendezvous with Rama" which is why I looked him up tonight. It was an honor to have known him and I know that he helped make me a better person. I am sad to hear of his passing.

Monte and I met in the 1970's when we were both graduate students at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. After graduation and going our separate ways we did get together a few times at an annual camp out of former graduate students. One of the couples involved in these camp outs is John & Kathy Schwartz, also good friends of Monte and Val. John & Kathy had visited Monte and Val in Roanoke and Monte told them the story of the pink flamingos which involved numerous people from the church that Monte and Val attended. My wife Sandy and I were camping with John & Kathy and we knew that Monte and Val would be stopping by for a visit. It was at this point that John & Kathy told Sandy and me about the pink flamingo story and we hatched the following plan. As it turned out, Sandy had recently purchased a string of pink flamingo lights for our camper and I had brought some firewood to the camp out, one piece of which was suitable for an award. This had not been planned but was something we put together at the last minute. When Monte and Val arrived, we got them to tell us what fun things they had been up to and they finally got around to telling us about their pink flamingo adventures. It was after this story that we feigned surprise and mentioned that every year at our UWM gathering we give out an award for the “Best Pink Flamingo Story” and that the 2014 award would go to Monte & Val. I have included some pictures of the award.
I have also added two pictures of the six of us at the Paul Bunyan Cook Shanty (I'm the one with the white beard).

Such a kind, wise, and faithful man of God. Our church family was so blessed to have him as part of our fellowship and as a fellow laborer. My heart is with you, Val. Praying for peace and comfort as you all navigate your grief for the earthly loss of Monte.

Our loss of a wonderful, kind and loving man cannot be expressed in appropriate words. Indeed, our hearts are broken. We will miss his gentle smile, and the pep in his step he always had. Never a roller coaster, water slide or fishing experience did he let go by. REST IN PEACE, MONTE! We love you......Reggie and Margie
