Walter Mayhew Spangler, 82, of Roanoke went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, November 29, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born January 6, 1930 in Roanoke, Virginia, a son of the late Ira Clay and Ruth Hudnall Spangler. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters, Gaynell "Toots" Ridenour, Martha Blake, and Mary Kelly; and brother, Ira Clay Spangler, Jr. Walter was a graduate of Jefferson High School, attended Roanoke College and Virginia Tech. He retired from the Norfolk and Western Railway as a Car Design Engineer. Walter was a longtime and active member of Northview United Methodist Church. He also served in the Air Force during Korea. Surviving are his devoted wife of 50 years, Sue Ellen Sites Spangler; sons, Mark Spangler and wife Wendy of Greensboro; Stephen Spangler and wife Lucy of Vicksburg, Mississippi; and Eric Spangler and wife Tammy of Blue Ridge; grandchildren, Suzanne, Griffin, Meghan, May, Ellen, and Jake; sister, Toby McCoy; sister-in-law, Mary Hinman and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to the Building Fund C/O Northview United Methodist Church 521 Ridgecrest Drive Roanoke, Virginia 24019. A graveside service will be conducted Noon Tuesday, December 4, 2012 in Sherwood Memorial Park. Following the graveside service, there will be a Celebration of Walter's life held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Northview United Methodist Church with Pastor Joe Klotz officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Monday, December 3, 2012 at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road. 366-0707
