Our sympathies to the Wingate family. We had the good fortune to be able to meet Mr. Wingate at his restaurant in 2011 when he joined our 3 generations of family members to speak about his relationship with my grandfather and his former dentist, Dr W.C. Jones. He regaled our group for 15 minutes with stories about the two of them. Such a fine man!

Our sincere condolences to the entire Wingate family. The world lost a truly fine man that spent his entire life helping others. I have known Harold for over 50 years and never heard anything but kindness from him or about him. This speaks volumes about who he is. His life will live on the the hearts of all that were touched by his extraordinary character.

I first became acquainted with Mr. Wingate in 1983 when I started to work for Pittsylvania County as a reassessment clerk and Wingate Appraisals was conducting the reassessment. I have had the fortunate pleasure to have maintained that relationship through the 34 years I have been employed by the County - lastly being the current Commissioner of the Revenue. Never was I disappointed when calling for assistance. He always had the answer. My only regret is I never made it to his beloved restaurant. He would always invite me whenever we talked and I kept saying I was coming. I never did! Don't put off today what you think you can do tomorrow. A great man, a great legacy and he will be missed by many. My condolences to all of the family.

What a privilege to have been known by Mr. Wingate and for countless times to have been on the receiving end of his gracious hospitality, generosity, and engaging storytelling of his life experiences, his walk with the Lord, and what he had learned. I will always remember his infectious grin and down home humor. He has shown me and many others what it looks like to be humble and charitable.
To say that he will be missed is an understatement. To the WIngate family, Sherie, Marion, and I send our deepest sympathies and thanks for sharing with us this wonderful man.

Kevin, family, and friends,
Cindy and I extend our deepest sympathies to all of you on Mr. Wingate's passing. He was always at the Homeplace with his smiling face and happy greeting to make everyone feel personally welcome. His idea of a family style restaurant was obviously brilliant and Kevin has fortunately kept this success going strong. We will miss talking with and seeing Mr Wingate but his memory will shine each day that the Homeplace continues to share its delicious food and beautiful surroundings with all of us. May Mr. Wingate's memory be a blessing to each of you and to all of his happy customers and friends as well.

Harold left a legend which will never be forgotten. My husband, Joseph Stoutamire, admired and respected him. When Harold needed architectural help, he called Joseph. Harold paid him with gift cards to dinners at The Homeplace. Our family could not have been more pleased! When Joseph passed away, Harold invited my family to dinner at The Homeplace following the funeral service. Many people have been blessed through his acts of kindness. I know how much he will be missed by Millie, Kevin, and the rest of his beloved family. Love, thanks, and sympathy to Harold’s family from my family.

I was sadden after the call from Don Thomas of the passing of Harold Tuesday morning. I have known and worked with Harold for over 30 years, he was one of the kindest, respected, happiest and most generous person I've known. The loss of Harold is similar to losing your last copy of the family photo album. I cherish the discussions we had over breakfast, lunch or dinner, at places like the Surry House in Surry County, or Allison's Drive Inn outside Abington on Rt. 11, or at Rowe's Family Restaurant near Staunton just to name a few. These are only a few of my fond memories I have of Harold Wingate. My deepest sympathy to all of Harold's family and the Wingate staff. Tom & Phyllis Morelli.

With the fondest of memories for a classic!!! Harold was such a grand gentleman and such a responsible and knowledgeable appraiser. Although he didn't do Frederick County assessment (we do in-house), we did work together on a number of occasions to assist other localities with "issues". I used his Mobile Home assessment information. It was always a pleasure seeing Harold a number of times at his restaurant. He will be sadly missed but very dearly remembered! I didn't know Mr. Wingate personally although my husband's family was acquainted with him and spoke fondly of him. However, I wanted to express my gratitude for Mr. Wingate's kindness in hiring my son, Josh, a few years ago when he had little experience in the field of appraisals. I always meant to travel to The Homeplace to see if I could meet and thank Mr. Wingate personally but never accomplished this endeavor. My prayers to your family in this time of loss.

Sending sympathy and hugs to the family of Harold Wingate. My husband, Fred and I, as well as our son, Greg, feel much sorrow of the passing of this wonderful man. His smile gave one such warmth and a feeling of caring for everyone. The Homeplace has been our favorite place to eat, for many many years. I recall once, that after my having been very sick, myself, for about five months, that when I was able to return to go there, Mr. Wingate came over to our table, telling me how glad he was to see me. When time for the check, our waitress came over to tell me that our dinner was taken care of. That memory will always be with me, reminding me of what a wonderful, generous man he was. There are few like him. I'm sure that God does, indeed, have another angel in heaven. We will continue going to the Homeplace, not just for the delicious food, but in memory of this kind and wonderful man. I pray for this family to be given strength and comfort in the coming days.

We are saddened to hear of the passing of a wonderful man, Mr. Harold Wingate. Since moving to Roanoke in 1991, our family & friends were regulars at The Homeplace. Our daughter attend Wingate University in North Carolina so we always kidded him that she went to "his" university. Since leaving Roanoke in 2010, we have still managed to get back to The Homeplace a few times. Our thoughts and prayers are with his son (also a super nice gentleman) and family at this time.

It was such a pleasure working with Mr. Wingate in 1994 on the Franklin County Reassessment. He was a joy to work with and to be around. I always explained him as someone with a twinkle in their eyes (like Santa Claus) when he would smile, which he did often. My husband and I really enjoyed eating at his restaurant also. God has another angel in him! Bless the family and may comfort and peace be with them today and always!

Dear Immediate Wingate Family and Appraisal Family,
Mr. Wingate was such a treasure, a truly amazing man. I met him back in 2006. He was amazing then and his legacy will live on in my sweet memories. You didn't have to be in his presence for more than a few minutes to know what a hard working, loving, and family man he was. When I asked him if he had any grandkids, he just lit up! Of course, he also had to tell me who they belonged to, that made him shine as well. I feel truly blessed to have known him. May the wonderful memories that you made together carry you through the difficult days ahead. Gods peace to you all, Penny R. Gray, Treasurer of Page County, VA

Everything said by others applies and so much more. He was our mentor in the restaurant business and always treated us like family at his own restaurant when we came back. We owe him so much and yet it always seems like it was the other way around for him. Truly an unselfish and gracious man. Harold Collins Wingate was an Ermersonion gentleman in every sense.
