Thomas Reed Smothers, Sr. 88 of Roanoke passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2011. He was born December 15, 1923 in Roanoke , a son of the late Nellie Maude and Samuel Lawson Smothers. Mr. Smothers was a veteran of World War II serving with General Patton's 3rd Army in the 328th Infantry Combat Team, the 26th Yankee Division. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and two Purple Hearts.
Surviving are his son, Thomas Reed Smothers, Jr. ; daughter, Suzee Caldwell and husband Tim; granddaughter, Melissa Merricks Bolen and husband Greg; great grandchildren, Evan Merricks and Avery Bolen and devoted friend and caregiver, Lois Lynch.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Roanoke Valley SPCA, 1340 Baldwin Avenue, Roanoke, Virginia 24012.
A graveside service will be held 11:00am Friday, November 18, 2011 in Sherwood Memorial Park with Chaplain Dave Simon officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00pm Thursday, November 17, 2011 at Simpson Funeral Home and Crematory, 5160 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke, Va. 24019, 540 366 0707
