Obituary of David D. Gilpin, III
David D. Gillpin, III, 71, of Roanoke answered the Clarion call of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on the morning of September 19, 2019. His transition was peaceful as God bade him come, thy good and faithful servant your work down here is done. No more sickness, pain or confusion. It is finished.
David was born October 19, 1947 in Richmond, Va to the late David D. Gilpin, Jr. and Nancy Scott Gilpin. He grew up in Petersburg and Prince George County, Va where he was taught about God at an early age forming a lasting loving relationship with him until he departed.
Growing up in Petersburg David was at home on the campus of Virginia State College which is now Virginia State University where he received a Masters Degree in Social Studies Education. He held various jobs until he was no longer able to work.
David moved his family to Roanoke where he later found his love Melrose Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was appointed Deacon under the leadership of Pastor Nathaniel Lyles. He was honored and proud to serve in that capacity.
David leaves a legacy of Love for God, Church and family to his survivors. Surviving are his wife, Sarah Gilpin, daughter, Carmel Dillard (Derrick Dillard) of Greensboro; grandchildren, Justin and Kaela Dillard of Greensboro; sister-in-law, Tina Arthur (Bronnie Smith) of Bath, NC; nephew, Brian Arthur and son Jaxson; along with many friends of the family and his church family.
David was a humble, gifted, loving man with a sharp wit and low tolerance for what he deemed nonsense. We are blessed because of the life he lived. His physical presence will be missed, but he will never be forgotten. He has left behind indelible imprints in our hearts and on our minds.
A celebration of David's life will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, September 28, 2019 at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road with the Rev. Charles Whitfield officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg, VA. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Arrangements by Simpson Funeral Home. 540-366-0707
