Obituary of Carol Jene Witt

Please share a memory of Carol to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Carol Jene Witt of Roanoke (better known as "Doodle" or CJ) was born December 3, 1933 a son of the late Samuel A. and Geneva Montgomery Witt passed away Friday, June 21, 2019.

Mr. Witt was a life long member of Westminster Presbyterian Church (formerly Melrose Presbyterian).  He served multiple terms as a Deacon throughout the 60's, 70s, 80s and beyond.  At Melrose Presbyterian he started out on the Cradle Roll (Nursery Department).  At that time another child was there named Barbara Hendrick, the two would marry in 1953.  As a teenager and young adult he and his future wife Barbara were actively involved in the youth organization, Christian Endeavor.

Carol attended Monroe Junior High School and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1953.  At Jefferson he was a standout on the Football Squad and was the team Captain.  He gained local and regional recognition awards.  He was a two time recipient of the Paul Martin Memorial trophy, awarded to a member of the football squad for outstanding character.

His professional life included a few years in the U S Army, then some time in the N& W General Office.  Most of his career would be spent as a dock worker and a truck driver with stints at Mundy Motor Lines, Hennis Freight Lines, and McLean Trucking.  His final and perhaps most memorable career was that of Bus Driver for Abbott Bus Lines where he drove for a wide variety of charter and tour trips that spanned vast regions of the continental United States and Canada.  For a portion of the bus tours, Barbara would go along, serving as a tour escort. Together they made a lot of friends and a multitude of wonderful memories.

Perhaps his most percious roles in  life were that of husband, father, grandfather and friend.

Surviving are his sons, Steven C. Witt and wife Linda, David A. Witt and wife Jackie White; grandchildren, Christine Gibson and husband Daniel, Karl Witt and wife Kimberly; great grandchildren, Nathaniel, Caleb, Ruth and Micah Gibson.
