Obituary of Roy Nelson McFarland, Jr.

Roy Nelson McFarland, Jr., 79 of Roanoke died Friday, December 7, 2018 at home following a brief illness.

He leaves his daughters and sons-in-law, Robyn McFarland and William Burnette, Holly and Terry Sparks, Hope and Ryan Key, and Ashleigh and Darin Goad; five grandchildren, Adam, Emily, Wade, Maggie and Baylee; his sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Glenn Agee; and nieces Heather and Shannon.

Roy was the son of Roy, Sr. and Dorothy McFarland, and was a lifelong resident of Roanoke.

He worked for Sowers, Rhodes and Whitescarver as a plumbing designer, the City of Roanoke as a building inspector and as a safety security officer.  He was the president of the Virginia Plumbing and Mechanical Association and the president of Virginia Cross Connecton Control Association.

Mr. McFarland had been active in youth sports as a coach, referee and umpire.  He was selected to umpire at the Big League Softball World Series.

An Irish Wake will be held at The Woodland Place 935 Niagara Road in Vinton, VA  6 p.m. Friday, December 21, 2018.  Family and friends are invited to attend.  The family plans to scatter his cremated remains in Ireland at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to First Christian Church 344 Church Avenue SW Roanoke, VA 24016.
