Obituary of Billy Hobart Gibson

William H. “Bill” Gibson, age 90 of Roanoke, VA, was welcomed by Jesus Christ into heaven on Thursday, October 25, 2018. He had been at  the Salem VA Medical Center.

Bill served in the United States Army in Guam.  He loved nature and the outdoors.  He was affectionately known by many as "The Walking Man." He hiked the Appalachian Trail three times!  He lived in California for much of his adult life and had many friends with whom he enjoyed hiking and doing trail work. 

Bill was born to the late Frank and Cassy Gibson of Tazewell, Virginia. He was also preceded in death by his step-mother, Nannie Fox Gibson of Charlotte, NC.  Other family who preceded him in death were brothers and sisters, George Gibson, Kenneth Gibson, Jane Conn, Juanita Helias, Mary Sparks, and Betty Smith. Surviving are his children, Diana Body (daughter, Olivia [Cameron Blount], children Riley, Cohen & Levin), Billy Gibson, David & Janet Gibson (son Joe Brown [Valerie], children, Adelynn & Rylan), Kate & Tyson Smith, Joy & Dave Rainey, and sisters and brothers, Joanna & Bill Brown, Paul & Jeanette Gibson, Shadrach & Delores Gibson, and Philip & Debby Gibson, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. 

A Visitation will be held at Simpson Funeral Home from 2­­­­­:00-6:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2018.  In lieu of flowers or food, please consider donating to your favorite charity or the ATC in memory of Bill Gibson, “The Walking Man”.
