Obituary of Doris Forrest Brown

Doris Forrest Brown, 89, a native of Frederick County, MD, and most recently a resident of Salem, VA, passed away Friday, September 28, 2018 at Richfield Retirement Center. 

Doris was predeceased by her parents, Theodore and Thelma Thompson Forrest of Brunswick, MD; and her brother and sister-in-law, John (Toady) and Jeanne Forrest, of Wilmington, DE.  She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Allan W. Brown; daughters Vickie (Randy) Smith and Jane Brown; grandchildren Tori (Allen) Hayes and Joe Shelor; and great-granddaughter, Hannah Hayes.

Doris began her career as a secretary/stenographer for the US government during the immediate World War II recovery period, leaving after 10 years to begin her family in 1956. Between 1953 and 1970, Doris and her family spent many years serving the US government in Germany, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Turkey.  Upon returning to the US, Doris enjoyed part-time medical office management and floral design jobs. In 1983, Doris and her husband moved to Myrtle Beach, SC, where she continued her many years of volunteer work, serving at least 15,000 hours in a number of capacities in many countries. The two moved to Salem in 2000 to be near family.

The family would like to thank the caring staff at the Joseph C Thomas center for its loving care and the nurses at Gentle Shepherd Hospice for their patience and love.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.  Arrangements by Simpson Funeral Home & Crematory.  366-0707
