Obituary of James Michael "Mike" Mauck
“His Lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.” Matthew 25:21
James Michael “Mike” Mauck, age 68, of Roanoke went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Aug. 23, 2018, at UVA Transitional Hospice Care in Charlottesville.
Born on Nov. 15, 1949 in Roanoke, he was the son of James L. and Ann Lorraine Vaught Mauck. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his grandmother, Minnie Louise Mauck.
Mike could be best described as four distinct people, each of whom was faithful to God and loved and respected by everyone who knew him.
There was the loving and devoted husband, who enjoyed traveling with and relished being around Linda, his beautiful bride. He was a compassionate father, grandfather and great-grandfather, who with a single look could let them know it was going to be okay or they better cut it out. The third Mike was well-known as a leader in business and community affairs and a Virginia Tech Hokies and sports enthusiast. Finally, and most important, he was a man of faith who let Jesus lead his life.
Mike was glad to let anyone know that he loved the Lord and anything that he achieved in life was through Christ. In 2014 he joined West End United Methodist Church. He immediately took on a role in leadership as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Mike oversaw the rebuilding of the portion of the church damaged by fire in April 2016. His leadership allowed the church to make even more repairs than anticipated. He also served as a greeter and usher, worked in the kitchen and did any other task at hand.
Mike was one of the founders of the Don Holiday Memorial Golf Tournament and served on the board of directors for many years. Mike was a long-time employee of Walker Machine and Foundry and an avid supporter of Roanoke Catholic Athletics.
Left to cherish his memory is the love of his life, high school sweetheart and wife of 50 years, Linda Hale Mauck of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Melissa Mauck of Blacksburg and Amy and Rich Krohmer of Roanoke; four grandchildren and spouse, Brandon and Donna Radford of Madison, Wisc.; Anna Radford of Blacksburg, and Spencer and Jackson Krohmer of Roanoke; two great-granddaughters Aubree and Addison. A host of cousins, nieces and nephews also survive.
The family will receive friends on Monday, Aug. 27, 2018 from 2-4p.m. And 6-8 p.m. at Simpson Funeral Home.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2018, in the West End United Methodist Church, 1221 Campbell Ave. SW, Roanoke. Pastor Lyle Morton, Pastor Emeritus Rev. Dr. Bernard Via and Rev. Ralph Harris will officiate. A luncheon will follow in the church Fellowship Hall.
Memorial contributions may be made to West End UMC, 1221 Campbell Ave. SW, Roanoke, Va. 24016.
May the work I’ve done, speak for me.
May the life I’ve lived, speak for me.
May the service I’ve given, speak for me.
The work I’ve done, sometimes it seems so small.
Sometimes, it seems like nothing at all.
But when I stand before my God.
I want to hear him say “Well done.”
May the workbook I’ve done, speak for me.
