Dr. Hugh P. Smith, 91, of Roanoke passed away Friday, August 31, 2012. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice "Bunny" Smith, parents, Hermon P. and Edna N. Smith, and a sister, Edna M. Driver. Dr. Smith served with the U S Navy in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was a graduate of the University of California, Berkley, and received his PhD from the University of Utah. He retired as a professor of Geology and Geography at Virginia Western Community College in 1985. He was a member of MENSA as well as the Roanoke Valley International Association of Torch Clubs. He volunteered with several birding societies in the valley as well as serving as a volunteer with the Science Museum of Southwestern Virginia. Surviving are his daughter, Janet Counts and husband Roger of Roanoke; grandchildren, James "Jim" Counts of Las Vegas, Nevada; Karen Counts of Glen Burnie, Maryland; and Sara Counts and fiancee Mike Longwell of Piedmont, California; nieces, Cheryl Matthews of Temecula, California; and Lori Kumagai and long time companion, Rosemary Ellis. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, the Unitarian Universalist Church or to Education Foundation C/O Virginia Western Community College. A memorial service will be scheduled for later in the month of September. Arrangements by Simpson Funeral Home & Crematory. 366-0707
