Obituary of Dorothy Elizabeth Brown

Dorothy “Dot” Walls Brown, 77, of Salem passed away Saturday, March 17, 2018.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Maitland and Alta Walls, daughter, Leigh Brown, grandson, Jonathan Patsel, and sons-in-law, Steve Horn and Stevie Bush.

Dot and her husband formed and operated, Roanoke Contractors, Inc. and later purchased and operated L.R. Brown, Sr. Decorating.   As a person who always wanted to give children an opportunity to play sports, she and her husband were among the community parents who formed the Mason’s Cove Recreation Club.  As a devoted parent and grandparent she attended many of her children’s and grandchildren’s games.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 60 years, Leon G. Brown; children, Becky (Mark) Patsel, Leon G. “L.G.” (Rhyanna) Brown, Lisa (Jeffery) Hall, Lynn Horn, Tina Bush and boyfriend, Steve Meadows and two individuals who she considered to be sons, William Duncan and Robert Young; grandchildren, Paul and Renee Heavener, Ben and Britney Patsel, Daniel and Cheyenne Patsel, Laura Patsel, Jacob and Kimberly Brown, Shannon and Adam Boswell, Allen Wright, Jeffery Hall and Ciara Ondell, Bobby Hall, Jessica and Brandon Watkins, Jamie Horn and Sam McSherry, Kotie Bush, Brandon Bush, and Ashley Layton, eleven great grandchildren, brother, Pete (Justine) Watkins; sister-in-law, Lois MacDonald and foster children, neighborhood children too numerous to mention.

A special thanks to Alan and Jack with Carilion Hospice for their many acts of kindness and compassion.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Roanoke Stars Wheelchair Basketball Team, c/o Blue Ridge Independent Living Center, 1502 B Williamson Road Roanoke, VA  24012.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, March 22, 2018 at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road by the Rev. Troy Mays.  Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at Simpson Funeral Home.  366-0707
