Obituary of James Robert Tyree, Sr.

James “Jim” Robert Tyree, 75 of Salem VA, passed away on Monday, March 12, 2018.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Elizabeth Tyree; his wife of 43 years Mary Ribble Tyree; and brothers Paul, Jr., Wayne, Jerry and Jack Tyree.

He is survived by his loving wife of 7 years, Arbutus Spradlin Tyree; sons James R. “Butch” Tyree, Jr.  (Joanie) of Daleville, Jerry W. Tyree (Jean) of Salem; grandchildren MacKenzie, Macey, Jacob, and Cooper Tyree; brothers, Larry “Pete” Tyree (Debbie) of Roanoke, Joe Tyree (Laurie) of Lenoir, NC, Curtis Tyree (Audrey) of Roanoke; step-children, William Spradlin, Jr. (Sybil), Jeffrey Spradlin, Rhonda Calge, and Patricia Zimmerman (Frank); special neighbors Dreama Ayers (Curtis) and Michelle Ouellette; cousins, nephews, nieces, and many lifelong friends.

Jim retired as a carpenter foreman from Norfolk Southern Corporation after 42 years of service. He enjoyed his summer garden, experiencing wildlife on his property, creating countless projects on his tractors, and swapping stories with friends in Pops’ garage.

Family was very important to Jim, “Pops.” He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He enjoyed seeing his family grow (especially the grandchildren) and was supportive as he attended numerous events over the years. He was proud of the family’s accomplishments.

Jim was an active member of the Masons Cove community, working with the volunteer fire department, and instrumental in the development of the Masons Cove Recreation Club. He was a member of Lamplight Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to Roanoke Stars Wheelchair Basketball, c/o Blue Ridge Independent Living Center, 1502 #B, Williamson Road, NE, Roanoke, VA 24012.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m., Friday, March 16 at Simpson Funeral Home, with Pastor Jeff Gardner officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
