Obituary of Elmer Burks Swain

Elmer Burks Swain, 90, of Roanoke passed peacefully to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 11, 2017.  He was born in Vinton, Virginia on October 11, 1927 a son of the late Edward O. and Elizabeth W. Swain.  In addition to his parents he was preceded by five brothers and three sisters.

Elmer served in the United States Navy during World War II and was later employed by Newport News Ship Building and Dry Dock Company.  He retired from the Norfolk Southern Railway.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Naomi Jean Obenshain Swain, son, Melvin Richard Swain and wife Cathy; daughter, Teresa Marie Swain Barnes and husband Doug; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

The family would like to offer a special thanks to the staff of Amedisys Hospice for their many acts of kindness and loving care.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be made to North Roanoke Baptist Church.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, November 17, 2017 at North Roanoke Baptist Church .  The family will receive friends immediately following the service.  Arrangements by Simpson Funeral Home & Crematory.  366-0707
