Obituary of Helen Elaine Grubbs

Helen Elaine Grubbs, 92, of Roanoke, passed away August 28, 2017.  Born in Roanoke in 1925, she was the daughter of William Gordon Wingfield and Helen Wright Wingfield.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Nelson E. Grubbs, her brothers William Gordon Wingfield, Jr. and Robert (Bobby) Wingfield, and her only daughter Pamela Jones.

Known to her friends as Elaine, she is survived by her grandchildren Lynnanne Catron and husband Billy, Chip Basham and wife Cyndee.   Her great-grandchildren are Meaghan Catron, Hallie Catron, Zoe Basham and Kent Basham.  Her Sisters in law are Nancy Wingfield and Nancy Jo Wingfield.

Elaine was a long time member of North Roanoke Baptist Church and truly cherished the friendships shared with the ladies of her Sunday School Class there.  She spoke often and fondly of friends made through the Roanoke County and Salem Recreation departments and the many trips they took together.  Her working years were spent providing home child care.  She positively impacted many families and children’s lives and truly loved the families that she served through the years.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the children’s department at North Roanoke Baptist Church.

A very special thank you is sent out to all the caregivers at Catawba Hospital, who took extraordinary care of her in her final days.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at North Roanoke Baptist Church, 6402 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke, in the sanctuary, at 11:00 am on Friday, Sept. 1, 2017.  Arrangements are being handled by Simpson Funeral Home and Crematory, Roanoke (540) 366-0707.
