William Clayton Mitchum, Jr. 89, of Roanoke passed away Sunday, June 18, 2017. He was born at home on August 26, 1927 in Charlotte, NC. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Mary Chaney and William Clayton Mitchum, Sr.

Mr. Mitchum lived and went to school in North Carolina, Georgia, Utah and Virginia before enlisting in the Marine Corps at the age of 17. During World War II he served with the First Marine Division overseas and in China. He attended Presbyterian Junior College where he lettered in football before transferring to Roanoke College.

He worked for the U.S. Government for seven years and General Electric for 32 years before retiring in 1986.He was a charter member and past president of the 100 club, and a past president of the Ole Monterey Golf Association. Additionally he was a long time member of Elks Lodge # 197, and a member of American Legion Post # 3. During his years of playing golf, he had two holes in one.

Surviving are his son, Richard Stephen Mitchum and wife Annie; daughter, Mary Lois Mitchum; all of Richmond; grandchildren, Chris and Emily; great grandchildren, Callie, Taylor, Richard August (Gus); sister, Norma Lee Snidow of Roanoke; brother, Donald C. Mitchum and wife Carol of Austin, TX; devoted friends and extended family, Teresa and Joe Pruitt of Rocky Mount.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be made to the Marine Corps League, Roanoke Attachment P O Box 12463 Roanoke, Virginia   24025  "Marines helping Marines".

A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, June 22, 2017 in Evergreen Burial Park by the Rev. Roy Miller. There will be no visitation. Arrangements by Simpson Funeral Home. 366-0707
