Obituary of Terry Dennis Loeschen
Please share a memory of Terry to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Terry D. Loeschen, June 22, 1938 - March 21, 2017.
Terry Loeschen died on March 21, 2017 surrounded by his family in Roanoke, Virginia following a brief illness. Married to Sue A. VanderPloeg in July 1961, Terry was a graduate of the University of Iowa and the Iowa School of Law. Terry and Sue moved to Burlington, Iowa in 1964, where he practiced law with the Cray law firm and several iterations of the firm thereafter, eventually forming the Loeschen and Loeschen law firm until his retirement in 2003. Upon retirement, Terry continued to work as a labor arbitrator throughout the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic states after relocating to Daleville, Virginia.
Terry was known for his love of the outdoors, particularly the Current River in southeast Missouri, hunting at the Crystal Lake Club and innumerable camping trips as a Scoutmaster of Burlington’s Troop 25. In later years, Terry enjoyed traveling abroad, boating at the Lake of the Ozarks and was especially fond of spending time with his grandchildren and enjoying activities with them, particularly if there was an amusement park or roller coaster involved.
A lifelong Episcopalian, Terry was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Burlington Iowa, having served six terms as vestry Senior Warden. Terry was also active in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Fincastle, Virginia, frequently serving as a Eucharistic lay minister. Terry was active in the Masonic Lodge, serving as Worshipful Master of the Catawba chapter. Terry loved his wife and his family, and he was fiercely loyal to them. He excelled as a trial attorney, and his dedication to his clients made him a formidable opponent in the courtroom.
Whether as president of his high school class, as a scoutmaster for twenty 12-year olds, as an attorney, or as a grandfather at Disney World, Terry Loeschen was always a leader, always seeking to do his best and always seeking the best possible result. He touched the lives of thousands of people during his lifetime, and he made their lives better for it. A great man, Terry Loeschen will truly be missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his wife Sue, Terry Loeschen is survived by his mother Arlene and his brother Mark of Phoenix, Arizona, his son, John Loeschen of Christiansburg, Virginia, his daughter Mary Loeschen of Burlington, Iowa and his grandchildren, Sam, Tim, Betsy and Miles Loeschen.
