Obituary of Emory Howard Bowers

Emory Howard Bowers, Jr, 83 of Salem passed away Friday, March 17, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents Emory H. Sr. and Thelma Armentrout Bowers, and his first wife Doris Roop Bowers. Howard was a graduate of Andrew Lewis High School and a member of both the Taylor and Isaacs Masonic Lodges. He retired from Piedmont Airlines and served in the U S Army. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Walden Bowers; son, Jim Bowers and wife Ginny; daughter, Judy Smith; grandchildren, Lisa (Sugar Plum) Frantz and husband Tommy; Frank Smith and Tammy, Mike Bowers and wife Catie; Josh Taylor and Karlee Benge; step children, Jerry, and Joey Avila and David Taylor; numerous nieces and nephews including a special nephew Tony Volpe. The family would like to offer a special thanks to the staff on the 3rd floor at Lewis Gale Hospital and the staff on 2 East at the Veterans Care Center for the special care they provided during Mr. Bower’s illness. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Shriners Children’s Hospital or to a veterans organization. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road. Interment with military honors will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at Simpson Funeral Home. 366-0707
