Larry "Curley" Ennis, 73, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, June 22, 2012. Curley was preceded in death by his parents, James and Helen Ennis, as well as his brother Michael. Curley served as a navigator in the Air Force after college and was able to travel overseas, which he greatly enjoyed. A musician for over 60 years, Curley was a national treasure. He loved teaching children about music, and did countless workshops across the country. His unique style of old time bluegrass and folklore was educational as well as entertaining. He has performed at numerous festivals and venues, including The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and The Floyd World Music Festival. He truly enjoyed sharing his talent with others. To quote Curley, "A good song doesn't disappear, but continues to live over a period of time by the participation of both performers and listeners. Even though a tune changes as it travels down the line, it can still be enjoyed and appreciated by all of us who are there to share it." Curley is survived by his significant other Margaret Caruthers; children, Jacob James Ennis, Hannah Caitlin Ennis, and Ransome Doyle Ennis; stepchildren, John Kevin Caruthers, Margo Hommes; Grandson Riley Reed Ennis; step-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Elizabeth Hommes; former wife Lynne Ennis. In lieu of flowers the family requests that you would make a donation to a charity of your choice in Curley's name. A memorial service will be conducted, Thursday, June, 28, 2012 from 7-9 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Roanoke. Arrangements by Simpson Funeral Home & Crematory. 540-366-0707.
