Obituary of Joseph Nelson Dillon
Please share a memory of Joseph to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
On Friday, December 23, 2016, Joseph Nelson Dillon was taken to be with his heavenly father who made him because of his belief in Jesus Christ, who died for his sins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack Nelson Dillon and Sarah Earles Dillon, beloved son James Samuel “Bo” Dillon, brothers-in-law: Gary L. Tusing, Jim Mayer, and Roger D. Lakes, sister-in-law, Betty Bedwell.
He leaves his beloved wife Carole Wiley Dillon, daughter Debra Ann Welch and husband Danny, Sr., step son Neal Coffman and wife Tracey, former wife and mother of his children Dagmar Maroney. He has 7 loving grandchildren and 8 loving Great-Grandchildren, who knew him fondly as “Choo-Choo” Joe. Sisters, Martha Mayer and Rebecca Lakes; brother; Charles H. Dillon and wife Susan, his 6 nieces and 1 nephew; special friends Kenny and Eileen Shelton; Mike Forester and daughter Shannon.
Joe served his country in the US Army from Oct. 1, 1958 to May 14, 1962, and lived a very active life. He visited Canada, Luxembourg, Germany and Brussels, Belgium. In Frances he visited the top of the Eiffel Tower and walked des Champs-Elysees to the Arc de Triompe. While there he also visited “Pig” alley and went to a nude beach.
During his life he worked as a tack welder at American Bridge; drove a home delivery route for Clover Creamery in Garden City and Mt. Pleasant. He was a division manager for Sears & Roebuck; helped open the new Woolco Dept. Store and was the owner/operator of Dillon Delivery Service. Most of his life he worked as a yard engineer for Norfolk and Western/Norfolk Southern railroad and where he also retired.
Smoking for over 60 years and breathing dirty diesel fumes from all the engines he operated, finally did him in. But that’s just life.
As he requested his remains will be cremated, so therefore a public viewing and service will not take place. Private services will be at a later date. Arrangements by Simpson Funeral Home & Crematory. (540)366-0707.
