Betty Flippen, 89, of Vinton, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2016. A woman of strength and humility, she received much pleasure in the simple things of life. She loved working in her yard, being around children, feeding the birds, watching the deer, cuddling her dog, and being with her family, she was most comfortable surrounded by the mountains, where she was born, near Arcadia, Va. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Everett E. Flippen; son, Larry Flippen; one brother and five sisters. She is survived by her sons, Wayne Flippen and wife Cristina, Dennis Flippen and wife Debbie; daughter-in-law, Kay Flippen; sister, Polly; grandchildren, Keisha, Kevin, Chris, Matt, Alissa, Grey, Natalie, and Michael and by her eleven great-grandchildren and extended family. Special thanks are expressed to her “girls” who helped care for her over the last two years, to Pheasant Ridge Nursing and Rehab Center for the excellent care over the last five months and to Medi Hospice for their care and guidance over the past year. A memorial graveside service will be held in Mountain View Cemetery in Vinton at 11:00am Monday November 28, 2016 to celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest a donation in her memory be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 3959 Electric Rd., Roanoke, VA, 24018 or a charity of their choice.
