Ruth Lenore Kroto, 93, of Roanoke passed away in Cary, N.C. on October 19, 2016 surrounded by her children. She was predeceased by her husband, Gerald Kroto and survived by her children: daughter, Peggy Kern; son, Ronald Kroto; son-in-law, Jeffrey Kern; daughter-in-law, Joan Kroto; 4 grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Ruth was born in Mellrichstadt, Germany and came to the United States with her parents, Josef and Thekla Frank in May 1938 to escape Jewish Nazi persecution. She lived in New York City and Roanoke and worked for Atlantic Mutual Ins. Co in both areas since 1964. She had a warm, loving and generous spirit to all her family and friends alike.

Ruth was an avid reader, enjoyed playing cards, going to the movies, the cultural arts of ballet, theatre, music and opera. After she retired she volunteered in the gift shop of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, the Bradley Free Clinic and was involved in her Synagogue Beth Israel, their Sisterhood, the Blue Book, the Bulletin Assembly team, the Friendship Club, Roanoke Chapter of Hadassah and participated in the Elder's Hostel.

Ruth was married in 1948 to Gerald Kroto for 43 years until his death in October 1991. She lived a full independent life for many years in Roanoke until October 2016 , when she had to move closer to her son Ronald, due to failing health. She will be laid to rest alongside her husband in Cedar Park Cemetery in Paramus, N.J. at a graveside service 10:30 a.m. Sunday, October 23, 2016. Arrangements by Simpson Funeral Home. 540-366-0707
