Obituary of Mary Ellen Westerman

Mary Ellen Booth Westerman joined her beloved E.C. on Monday, August 22, 2016. Mary and E.C. shared a long life together in Fincastle and are now reunited in their heavenly home. Mary was born on September 24, 1928 to Mattie Ellen Nofsinger Booth in her home on Main Street in Fincastle. She lived her whole life in Botetourt County, first in the quaint town of Fincastle, then the home she and E.C. built on Blacksburg Road, back to Fincastle in her 1776 cottage and then the last five years at the Glebe in Daleville. Mary graduated from Fincastle High School and then Averett College. She worked as a secretary at the VA until she met and married E.C. Westerman Jr. who came to Fincastle to practice law. She became his secretary until they began their family, daughter, Mary Marcia Westerman Neighbors and son Elmer Curtis Westerman III. Mary was very involved in the Big Spring Garden Club, Historic Fincastle, Inc., and just about any other group that needed something to be organized. She was a member of Fincastle Baptist Church in her younger years and then Fincastle Presbyterian Church. Mary is survived by her two children, Marcia (Mack) Neighbors, and Curt Westerman; grandchildren, Chad (Cherie) Neighbors, Christine (David) Slingluff, Ginni Ellen (Dallas) Morris; great-grandchildren, Isiah Moran and Amelia Neighbors; sister, Betty Lou Booth Hawes; and sister-in-law, Barbara Westerman Newlon; and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the very loving staff at the Glebe who gave so much to make Mary's life so good and were like extended family, Good Samaritan Hospice, and all the friends who were so faithful to visiting with her. A graveside service will be conducted 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 25, 2016 in Godwin Cemetery by the Rev. JR Graybill. A celebration of Mary's life will follow at 11 a.m. at Fincastle Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Iain S. Maclean officiating.
