Obituary of Vernon Leslie Wingo

Vernon Leslie Wingo, 87, of Roanoke passed away on Friday, July 8, 2016. He is now reunited with his high school sweetheart and wife of 59 years, Aileen Doss Wingo. He is also preceded in death by his parents, Bud and Emma Ridgway Wingo, his sisters and brothers, Virginia Arthur, Allen Wingo, Lois Coffey, Mason Wingo, Sr., Dorothy Overstreet, Ina Bobbitt, Leonard Wingo and Cecil Wingo, Sr., and his son-in-law, John F. Giordano. A Roanoke native, Vernon was born May 27, 1929. He graduated in 1949 from the old William Fleming High School and was a member of the "Golden Colonels". His passion for football started with his football playing days for his beloved Colonels. Vernon worked at ITT where he retired after 34 years as a supervisor of the tool and die shop. Prior to ITT, he was a machinist for the old N & W Railroad. Surviving are his loving daughter, Susan and son-in-law, Jon Roelofs of Sun Lakes, AZ. Also surviving are his grandsons, John Robin Giordano, Jay (Serena) Giordano both of Shelter Cove, CA, Ryan Giordano of Woodstock, IL and great grandsons, Avi (son of Ryan) and Ezekiel (son of Jay). He loved being "Uncle Vernon" to his many nieces and nephews. Vernon cared greatly for his sister-in-law, Naomi Wingo and his special friend Clarence Short. A celebration of Vernon's life will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road.
