John Carlton (JC) Smith, 66, of Roanoke went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, June 6, 2012. He was preceded in death by his father, John William Smith, mother, Mamie B. Smith, sister, Catherine Spradlin, and brother in law, Gary Spradlin. JC served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. For many years he volunteered as a sandlot football and baseball coach. He was a former employee of the Norfolk and Western Railway and an avid fisherman. Surviving are his loving wife, Sherry Smith; sons, Jim and Stacy Chattin, Chris Smith, Alan Burton; daughters, Tonya Leigh Peters, Allison and Eric Jansen, grandchildren, David Peters, Alan-Michael Radford, Josh Smith, Lauren and Tyler Chattin, Hayden and Meredith Allen, Kaylynn and Kamryn Jansen; brother, William C. (Bill) Smith; "special brother", Dennis Morgan; sisters, Vickie "Dede" Smith and Elizabeth "Betty" Wheeler and husband Don. Numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, June 11, 2012 at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road by the Rev. Troy Mays. Interment with military honors will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Simpson Funeral Home. 366-0707
