Capt Percifield, CAP FL-293 posted a condolence
Monday, June 27, 2016
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air… .
Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
— John Gillespie Magee, Jr
RIP Lt Col Hillman - A life well lived!

I will always remember Wes as an outstanding gentleman, flyer and friend. I can remember, as if was yesterday, my days with Wes as my instructor in the J 3 Cub takng me into a field on the side of a mountain where had to land up hill to stop on such a short area and takiing off downhill to get airborn and that was just one of many thrills with Wes!
Now everybody in Heaven will learn to solo.

We'll never forget our first flight. Mr. Hillman took the two of us up in his Cessna 172 almost 40 years ago there at Woodrum Field. What excitement!!!! He was a wonderful man and excellent pilot.

My Pop and Wes were pals who shared the love of aviation. I felt fortunate to have met him on a few occasions, one of which was with my father, Charlie Kulp, who is now 90. It was heart warming to see the two of them become young boys again, arms wrapped around one another, as they dropped the weights imposed by age and spoke excitedly about their love of flying. Wes was light on his feet as he went in search of some photos he wanted to share with Pop. They sat for a long time reliving old memories and remembering old friends. I am sure Wes is happy to be with his beloved wife once again. I can just see his sweet smile beaming in heaven. My thoughts are with the family as they go through this period of loss and adjustment, encouraged by the knowledge that they will be together one day.
Fly where you want to Wes, there's no one there to stop you!

My Dad, Bill McCutchen, was there, too, to greet Wes on Friday. Mr. Hillman and my dad were good friends who hung out and flew at the Roanoke Airport. Mr. Hillman took me up for my first flight when I was 15 years old. I will miss seeing Wes at Crouch's (Hill's) Drug Store where we often ran into each other. You will be missed so much.
Prayers and thoughts are with the Hillman family,
Sincerely,
Lynn Ellen

I know our dad, Charlie Jackson, was so happy to see Wes when he arrived on Friday! We have such fond memories of Flying Club picnics, including rides over the valley, being at the Hillman hangar so often as kids. Wes was truly a special kind of man and we are honored to have known such a history-maker. On behalf of my sister Valerie and my mom, Sally, we extend our deepest sympathy for your loss, but rejoice in the hope of eternal life to come in Heaven. Fly to Jesus-and LIVE!

Although I live in Woodbridge (Northern Virginia), I was raised in Roanoke and have many happy memories of Wes during my growing-up years as a Civil Air Patrol (CAP) cadet in the Roanoke CAP Squadron. Wes was a great man who imprinted the lives of so many young people. He will always be in my heart and on my mind. Sincere sympathies to his family and friends.
