James "Jimmy" W Michael Jr 87, of Roanoke, Passed away Tuesday, February 9, 2016 in his home. He was the son of the late James W and Gray N Michael.
Some of Jimmy's many interests were golfing, hunting, fishing, painting, playing cards and sharing his knowledge of the history of Roanoke. He was a charter and active member of St. Philip Lutheran Church where he served on church council, sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. Jimmy was vice-president, secretary and treasurer of Michael's Bakery. He was known for his hand painted humorous and picturesque birthday cakes and loved by beach buddies, campers and college students for his "care packages" of baked goods.
Jimmy graduated from William Fleming High School Class of 1947 and was founding president of the Golden Colonels. He was an avid Hokie fan, member of the Virginia Tech class of 1950 and the ROTC program.
He served in the Army during the Korean conflict and was stationed in Germany, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant E6.
He was a charter member of Roanoke County Number 5 rescue squad, scout leader and baseball coach. He taught cake decorating at New River Community College.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jo Ann M Michael, son Jay Michael and partner Lisa Tyree; Daughter Ginger Boncek and partner Sharon Mulvey, grandsons Logan Amos and Christian Michael and their mother Kim Michael; sister Beverly M Hite and husband Billy; niece Ann and husband John Felton and nephew Peter Hite and wife Patty; extended family and friends.
Jimmy never met a stranger and was friend and inspiration to all. He was well known at his favorite frequented restaurants: The New Yorker, Hollywood's, Lews, Coach and Four and David's (now Mikes). He will be remembered as the "Sheikh of his harem", and his nightly calls to family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the St. Phillip Lutheran Church 8115 Williamson Rd, Roanoke, VA or your favorite charity. The family wishes to extend many thanks to Rodney Cannon, Carilion's Hospice Care, and Danielle Hurley and Helpful Hands Health Care.
A visitation will be held 12:30p.m. Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at St. Philip Lutheran Church with the memorial service following at 1:30p.m. at the Church. The Rev. David and Kelly Derrick will officiate. Arrangements are being handled by Simpson Funeral Home, 540-366-0707
