Robert Harold Bird of Roanoke died August 5, 2015 after a short illness. Bob was born October 5, 1944 in Charleston, West Virginia to the late John Robert (JR) and Corlota Moore Bird. He was preceded in death by his brother John Theodore (Ted) Bird. Bob is survived by his wife of 45 years Ann Duxbury Bird and children John Paul Bird of Blacksburg, Virginia and Elizabeth Bird Rock (Kevin) of Woodbridge, Virginia. He is also survived by his four sisters Bonnie Bird Surface (Dino), Sharon Bird Auvil (JD), Myrna Bird, and Pam Bird Powell (Tom). Bob retired as the Municipal Auditor in 2001 after a long career working for the City of Roanoke. Bob was a Scouter with Troop and Pack 5 of the Blue Ridge Mountains Councils for nearly 30 years. He proudly helped 17 Boy Scouts reach the rank of Eagle Scout. He also worked for many years after retirement at Camp Ottari teaching woodcarving and helping wherever he could. Bob was a longtime member of Saint James Episcopal Church. He served in a wide range of roles including serving on the vestry and working as the treasurer. Among the community projects Bob worked on was the reclamation of Springwood Burial Park after years of neglect. The funeral service will be Saturday, August 8 at 2 PM at Saint James Episcopal Church at 4515 Delray St., Roanoke, VA 24012. A reception will follow after the service in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts should be given to Saint James Episcopal Church or the Boy Scouts of America.
