Coburn, Lonice Bane Lonice Bane Coburn, 92, of Roanoke passed away on Sunday, April 20, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rebecca Katherine Bane Coburn and Lonice Blackford Coburn, sister, Ferne Coburn Bondurant, first wife Margaret Coburn, second wife, Sarah Hall McDowell Coburn and sons, Madison Allen Coburn and George Allen Coburn. Surviving are his sister, Beverly Coburn Fanning, Floyd; daughter, Kathy Coburn, grandchildren and their families; Billy Lacy and great granddaughter Maggie May Brewster of Floyd, Lee wife Rashida, Idriss and Isabella Shively of Richmond, Bryant Coburn of Roanoke; Jesse Coburn, nephew, Lon Fanning and wife Donna of Geneva, Ill., niece Becky Bondurant of Buchanan, cousins, Jessee Bane Ring and wife Debby of Radford, Cody Snyder, and Chelsea Snyder of Colorado. Bane was born in Narrows, Va. on September 26, 1921. He served in World War II as a Platoon Sergeant, with the 3rd Army, 97th Chemical Mortar Battalion in the European Theater of Operations. After the war, he entered VPI, graduating in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Light Building Construction. He worked at the Thompson and Payne Architectural Firm for 24 years after graduating from VPI. During his time with Thompson and Payne, Bane designed buildings for Longwood College, Roanoke College, and Radford College. He was later employed by Roanoke City as a Civil Engineer. He retired from the Engineering Department of the city in 2002 after 28 years of service. He was responsible for many projects while employed by Roanoke City, namely, the design of the Roanoke City Jail. For his contributions he was made an Honorary Deputy Sheriff. In 1997, he was awarded status as an Honorary Member in The Virginia Society of the American Institute of Architects. Bane was a kind soul with very deep religious beliefs. He loved his family and his church. The family would like to thank The Glebe, Emeritus at Roanoke and Gentle Shepherd Hospice for their loving care given to Bane. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to First Presbyterian Church 702 Memorial Boulevard Narrows, Virginia 24124, Westminster Presbyterian Church 2216 Peters Creek Road Roanoke, Va. 24017 or to the First Tee of Roanoke 3737 Densmore Road Roanoke, Va. 24017. Funeral services will be conducted Noon Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road by Dr. John W. Furman. A graveside service will follow at 2:30 p.m. in Fairview Cemetery, Narrows, Virginia. The family will receive friends on Tuesday one hour prior to the service. Arrangements by Simpson Funeral Home.
