Obituary of Kenneth Rice

Kenneth S. Rice, Sr., 82, of Roanoke passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2014. He was born January 27, 1931 in Covington to the late Ashby Lawrence Rice, Sr. and Musa Leola Steele Rice. In additon to his parents, Mr. Rice was preceded in death by two brothers, Ashby and Luther, one sister, Natoma Winnerling, father-in-law Bernie Daugherty, son-in-law, Edward Lilly, and a great grandchild, Abigail Rice. Mr. Rice retired from the United States Air Force after a 20 year career reaching the rank of Technical Sergent. He served in many parts of the world and several places within the United States. He later worked for Mosler Lock and Safe Company traveling much of the Roanoke Valley providing technical assistance to many of the banks in the regiion, and most recently was employed at Center in the Square. He will be missed dearly by his loving family and friends for his down to earth common sense approach to life, generously providing support, compassion, and love to all. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, June E. (Daugherty) Rice; daughers, Karen Lilly of VA; Anita Mattingly and husband Mike of Minn.; sons, Kenneth Rice, Jr. and wife Sue of Ohio; Robert Rice and wife Susan of VA; mother in law Mabel Daugherty; sister-in-law, Lelia Fadley and husband Franklin; grandchildren, Christina Lilly, Belinda Overstreet and husband Stacy, Edward Lilly and wife Stephanie, Elizabeth Bailey and husband Trent, Deborah Sweeny and husband Paul, Kenneth Rice, III, Daniel Rice and wife Renee, Amy Fuhs and husband Matt, and Zachary Rice; great grandchildren, Keryston Hutson, Aminee Hutson, Angelina Overstreet, Casey Overstreet, Tori Lilly, Austin Bailey, Layla Bailey, Lil Roy Bailey, Rebecca Sweeny, Paul Sweeny, III, Andrew Rice, Avery Rice, and Aiden Rice. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Dublin, Virginia. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Mondlay at Simpson Funeral Home. 366-0707
