One of my graduate students at Virginia Tech, Sher Nadir from Pesharwar Pakistan got to know Mrs Freeman first as his landlady at her house on Roanoke St. This relationship grew in mutual respect nurtured by the love and caring of this wonderful women to the point that Mary Freeman became known to Sher as his "American Mother". Following graduation, Sher's visits to Blacksburg always included a stop at Mrs Freeman's house or the hospital. Likewise, if Mrs Freeman had not heard from Sher, she would call me to see if everything was OK ( it was not an easy time for Pakistanes in the US). Putting them back in touch relieved anxiety on both ends. What a wonderful gift Mrs Freeman gave this young man as his American Mom
