Esther Mae Hood Hales, 95,of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2013 in Greensboro, N.C. She was born March 30, 1918 a daughter of the late Raymond and Lillie Davis Hood. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey L. Hales Sr., a sister, Elizabeth Mitchell and one great-grandchild. Mrs. Hales retired after 20 years of service with Roses Department Store and was a member of Shenandoah Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Portsmouth. Surviving are four sons, Melvin D. Hales, Duke C. Hales and wife Judith all of Greensboro, Donnie L. Hales and wife Pauline of Randolph County, N.C., Harvey L. Hales Jr. and wife Brenda of Wilmington, N.C.; fourteen grandchildren; thirty six great- grandchildren; three great- great-grandchildren; sisters, Annie Ruth Jones of North Carolina, and Margaret Creech and husband Winston of Boones Mill; and numerous nieces; and nephews. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Shenandoah Baptist Church 6520 Williamson Road Roanoke, Va., 24019. Funeral Services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, November 30, 2013 at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road by the Rev. Robert L. Alderman and the Rev. Greg Hales. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service on Saturday. Arrangements by Simpson Funeral Home. 540-366-0707.
