Obituary of Robert Layman

Robert E. (Bob) Layman, Jr. 68 of Fincastle passed away Thursday, November 21, 2013. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert E. Sr. and Dorothy Johnson Layman. Bob was a 1968 graduate and longtime supporter of Virginia Tech. As a resident of his beloved Botetourt County he served the community in many ways. He served the county as an extension agent from 1968 to 1971 and in that capacity played a part in securing the Horse Show for the Roanoke Valley. He served as a member of the County Board of Supervisors from 1988 to 1998 and was instrumental in many of the economic development projects in the county. In 1971 he purchased Craft Farm Implement (now known as Blue Ridge Farm Center) from which he retired in 2000. Surviving are his wife of 27 years, Joyce Whitley Layman; sons, Robert E. (Bob) Layman, III and wife Lori of Chesterfield; Eric K. Layman and wife Sharon of Cloverdale; Christopher D. Moore and wife Wanda of Danville; grandchildren, Campbell, Emily, Emma, Grace, and Garrett Layman, and John Michael King; brother, Michael Layman and wife Jani of Fincastle; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends too numerous to mention. The family would like to offer a special thanks to the nursing staff at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for the many acts of kindness shown them during Bob's hospitalization. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Fincastle Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad. A gathering of Bob's friends will take place Sunday, November 24, 2013 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road. Private services will be scheduled for a later date.
