Obituary of John Spencer

John R. Spencer, 73 of Roanoke passed away Sunday, November 17, 2013. He wsa preceded in death by his mother and father, Mabel Worthington Spencer and Ted Spencer, and a brother Charles. Mr. Spencer was a 1958 graduate of Welch High School and attended Concord College. He served in the U S Army during the Vietnam War and retired after 30 years of service with Sears. Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Edie Hylton Spencer; children, John Spencer and wife Julie Daul of Chapel Hill, N.C.; Michael Spencer, Carrboro, N.C.; Aimee Spencer of Roanoke; grandchildren, Brendan, Rhain and Kris Thomas Thomas; and his first granddaughter is expected to be born in December. Also surviving are his sisters, Ann Gilley, Janet Hardison and husband Charlie all of Smith Mountain Lake; Minnie Robinson of Princeton, West Virginia; numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to to Good Samaritan Hospice. A graveside service will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday, November 21, 2013 in Roselawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Arvel Jones. The family will receive friends following the service.
