Obituary of Gary Shockey

Gary L. Shockey of Roanoke passed away Sunday, November 10, 2013. He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis S. and Margaret Shockey, sister-in-law, Donna Shockey, nephew, Eric Shockey, and father-in-law, J. Edward Slusher. Surviving to cherish his life and love are his wife of 44 years, Judy Shockey, his daughter, Robyn Hurley and significant other, Allen Kirby of Salem, Amanda Shockey and significant other, James Rogers of Goodview, brother, Francis, Jr. and wife Ellen and Harold and wife Loretta all of Copper Hill, and his mother-in-law, Lois Slusher of Floyd. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. Gary attended Floyd County High School graduating in 1966 and then attended Mars Hill College where he majored in chemistry and biology. After graduation he was employed by the Salem Water Department. He and Judy moved to Jonesboro, Georgia where he was employed with the National Life and Accident Insurance Co. Both missed Virginia and after returning he worked both construction and maintenance for Sans Souci Apartments. In 1979 he joined Lawrence Transportation and became a coast to coast Master Lease Operator for United Van Lines until his retirement in 2004. Although he was away from home, he would call home often to check on "his girls". Each moment he could spend at home with his family was cherished. He was a loving husband to Judy and a wonderful father, role model, and "advice giver" to both Robyn and Amanda. They will cherish his love and devotion to each of them and the many wonderful memories he gave them. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Salvation Army 724 Dale Avenue S.E. Roanoke, Va. 24013 Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday, November 14, 2013 at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road by Pastor Angela Carr. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Simpson Funeral Home. 366-0707
