Alton Joseph (Joe) Gibson 83 of Buchanan (formerly of Salem) went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, October 15, 2013. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Bessie Marie and Brittian Peery Gibson, sister, Alma Divers, and wife, Clara Gertrude Moore Gibson. Mr. Gibson retired from Valley Rich Dairy. Surviving are his son, Danny Gibson and wife Pamela of Roanoke; daughter, Donna Lynn Gibson Lowe and husband Carl of Ferrum; seven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, brothers, Elmer Gibson and wife Mary Alice of Roanoke; and Fred Gibson of Salem. The family offers a very special thanks to the nursing staff at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and the staff at Salem Health and Rehab Center for all of the special acts of kindness during Joe's illness. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation or to Good Samaritan Hospice. A graveside service will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, October 18, 2013 in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park by Pastor Steve Roberson and the Rev. Maurice Pendleton. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road. 366-0707
