Obituary of Shirley Thompson

Shirley Rakes Thompson, 86 of Roanoke devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother passed away Friday, August 23, 2013 in Richmond, Va. She was born September 29, 1926 in Bluefield, West Virginia a daughter of the late Charles and Macy Ann Ashworth Rakes. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her step/mother Nell Rakes and a son Frank Michael Thompson. Mrs Thompson worked as a legal secretary and retired as a bookkeeper with Roanoke Apple Products. She was a member of Shenandoah Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Frank M. Thompson; son and daughter in law, Mark E Thompson and wife Deborah of Richmond; grandchildren, Mark Aaron Thompson and Elizabeth A. Thompson; brothers, Charles S. Rakes and Steven B. Rakes; sister, Sylva R. Brown; and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be made to Shenandoah Baptist Church 6520 Williamson Road Roanoke, Va. 24019. A memorial service will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, August 30, 2013 at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road by the Rev. Robert L. Alderman. Interment will follow in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
