Obituary of William Basham

William E. (Edd) Basham, Jr. 90, of Roanoke went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 11, 2013. He was preceded in death by his first wife (and the mother of his children) Frances Scruggs Basham, his second wife Katie Mills Basham, parents, William E. Sr. and Edna Annie Basham, brother, Donald Eugene Basham, and sisters, Margaret Delores (Peggy) Basham, and Virginia Basham Williams. Mr. Basham retired from the United States Navy after 27 years of service. He served in the Pacific during World War II, then served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He and his family were stationed at the Guantonomo Bay Naval Station in Cuba. Edd also had numerous assignments of sea duty. During the Vietnam war he was assigned to the 2nd Marine Division and worked as an Advanced Hospital Corpsman. He attended Forest Park Baptist Church and later Grace United Methodist Church. He was a member of the American Legion as well as the Disabled American Veterans. Surviving are his daughters, Sherry Leigh Basham of Copper Hill; Barbara Basham Goode and husband David of Roanoke; Kelly Basham Seward and husband Fonda (Bubba) of Penhook; grandchildren, Robin Goode Salo and husband Eric, Kasie Sink McClamma and husband David,Lisa Goode Wirt and husband Chad; Jesse F. Seward; great grandchildren, Jacob McClamma, Cade A. and Jackson D. Salo, Emma A. and Clara K. Wirt, Madison G. McClamma; brother, Robert P. Basham and wife Louise of Roanoke; step children, Harold Mills and wife Linda, Ronnie Mills, Wayne Mills and wife Pattie, Kathy Thorne and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be made to the Salvation Army, Grace United Methodist Church or to a charity of the donor's choice. The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff at the Virginia Veterans Care Center for all the love and care provided during Edd's residency. Funeral services will be conducted 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 13, 2013 at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road by the Rev. E. E. "Dick" Jones. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Friday at Simpson Funeral Home. 366-0707
