Obituary of Donald Greenwood

Don Greenwood, 67, of Roanoke went to be with the Lord on Monday June 10, 2013 after a brief illness. Born in Danville VA on May 3, 1946 to the late Calvin Greenwood and Ruby Hunt Strickland, he moved to Roanoke and graduated from Jefferson High School. He courageously and proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was also predeceased by a sister JoAnn Greenwood Holland and a brother Micky V. Strickland. Surviving are his loving wife of 30 years Ruth Williams Greenwood; daughter, Ursula Lee of Rocky Mount; son Erich Stephens of Roanoke, and two grandsons he is very proud of, Dalton and Wyatt Lee. Also surviving are a brother, Rick Greenwood and wife Debbie; sisters, Paula Strickland Gibson and husband Dewey, Gloria Strickland Harris and husband Troy, Tammy Thacker Heck and husband Julian; aunts, Virginia Hunt Albrecht of Williamsburg, Nadine Greenwood Prillaman and Mary Jo Barker Greenwood of Collinsville. Along with many close nieces, nephews, and cousins. Don loved genealogy and was a Civil War history buff. He was known for his jokes and a strong sense of family. A services celebrating Don's life will be held 11:00am Thursday, June 13, 2013 at Simpson Funeral Home on Peters Creek Road. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 12, 2013 from 6-8pm at the funeral home.
