Linwood "Chief" Locklear 81 of Roanoke, went home to be with his Lord and Savior and his beloved wife of 56 yerars "Miss Jane" on Sunday, June 9, 2013. Miss Jane and Chief were kept apart by this earthly realm by a mere eleven days. Born on March 27, 1932 in Fairmont, N.C. He grew up on a farm with his parents and five brothers and sisters. There he learned a strong work ethic and that honest hard work pays off. Chief served in the U S Navy during the Korean War as his ship's barber. Upon leaving the Navy he met and married "Miss Emma Jane Hartman. Linwood had a successful barbering carrer in Winston Salem. On weekends he traveled with Redken Laboratories on an Educational Team and taught along side Vidal Sasson and Paul Mitchell. In 1973 he was awarded the honor of North Carolina's Barber of the Year. He was awarded one of the first plaques for Best Unisex Salon in 1976. In 1977, he purchased the Virginia Barber & Styling College (later known as the Virginia Hair Academy) and moved his family to Roanoke. He taught many barber students (one of which named him "The Chief"). His strong work ethic and morals kept him busy through his retirement years. As an active member of Bonsack Baptist Church he kept busy volunteering with the Educational ministry and participating on mission trips. Surviving are his daughter, Robin L. Bryant and husband, Stuart; son, Craig Locklear and wife Anna; and daughter, Terri L. Mayhew and husband Jeff; grandchildren, Melissa L. Waller and husband Craig, Phillip Locklear, and Moriah Mayhew; great grandson, Atticus Waller; sisters, Genene Dotson, and Katrina Locklear. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to the Education Ministry C/O Bonsack Baptist Church 4845 Cloverdale Road Roanoke, Virginia 24019. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road by Dr. Robert G. Moore, III. A graveside service will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday in Forsyth Memorial Park, Winston-Salem, N.C. by the Rev. John Rechtenwald. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Simpson Funeral Home. 366-0707
