Bill S. Miller 89 of Roanoke died Wednesday, May 8, 2013. He was born in Chattanooga, TN. on January 19, 1924 to the late Elise H. Miller and C. Luther "Luke" Miller. He was also preceded by his wife and best friend of 70 years, Helen B. Miller; a sister, Elizabeth "Liz" Hopkins and his long time hero his grandfather, Rev. Calvin L. Miller. Bill spent 40 years in Retail Sales and worked from Boston to Miami. He was a member of the Williamson Road Lions Club and a life member of the VFW for his service in World War II. Bill proudly served in the United States Navy as a member of the Armed Guard and saw action in all three theaters of the war. Bill was a faithful Lutheran from birth till his death and at the time of his passing was a member of St. Philip Lutheran Church. As a member of St. Philip Lutheran Church, he was very active in the ministries of the church. His highlight at St. Philip was when the church moved to Williamson Road, he was the person who worked with the Contractor and Building Committee (Yes, that was a great ministry). Bill is survived by his children, Stuart (Paulette), Selise, Lynn Wheeler (Darrell), Wende Markham (Richard), Chuck (Sharon); also by his six grandchildren, Sian, Nathan, Lawson, Logan, Megan, Kelly and eleven great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Philip Lutheran Church, 8115 Williamson Rd, Roanoke, Va. 24019 or the National D-Day Memorial Foundation, P.O. Box 77, Bedford, Va. 24523 in his memory. A memorial service celebrating Bill's life will be held 1:00pm Saturday, May 11, 2013 in St. Philip Lutheran Church with Pastor David Derrick and Pastor Kelly Derrick officiating. A reception will follow at the church. Bill was cremated and his ashes will be scattered at a later date.
