George D. (Dan) Allen 93 of Salem went home to be with his beloved daughter, Patricia Gayle Hale and his family Saturday, May 4, 2013. Mr. Allen served proudly in the United States Army during World War II and during this time was a P.O.W. He worked for VPI Electrical, and retired from the Kroger Distribution Warehouse after 22 years of service. After retiring, his hobby of fixing lawn mowers, chain saws or anything with a small motor became his full time passion. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 73 years, Lillian A. Allen; four children, Norman Allen and wife Carla of Florida, Beverly Brooks of Floyd, Georgia Allen of Williamsburg, Danetta Allen of Salem; fifteen grandchildren, twenty six great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren and a dear friend, Thomas Campbell of Salem. The family would like to thank the Doctors and Nurses at the Salem VA Medical Center for their care and support of Mr. Allen. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in his name to a church or charity of your choice. A graveside service celebrating Mr. Allen's life will be held 1:30pm Wednesday, May 8, 2013 in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. Family will receive friends before the service from 12:00 till 1:00pm at Simpson Funeral Home.
