Peggy June Melton Sloane, 88, of Roanoke, passed away at her home on Saturday, April 13, 2013, surrounded by her children. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry E. and Emma C. Melton of Roanoke, husband, Billy C. Sloane and son, Ellett L. Sloane of Roanoke. Surviving are her children, Daniel E. Sloane and wife Janet of Tioga, Texas; Joel M. Sloane of Roanoke; Holly R. Sloane of Orange, California; and Cyndi Sloane Croft of Roanoke; grandchildren, Zacary L. Croft, Isaac J. Sloane, Emma M. Sloane, Nicholas T. Sloane, Amanda K. Croft of Bedford and Bobby Caudle and Susie Caudle of Roanoke; great grandchild, Laura G. Croft; special brother and sister in law, George E. and Masako M. Sloane; special niece, Irene Sloane Edelmann of White Plains, New York; special nephews, Harry W. Helm and Paul Helm, Jr. of Greenbelt, Maryland; Robert Helm of Charlotte, N.C. After graduating from Eastern High School in Washington, D.C., she attended the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg and then moved to Roanoke to pursue a career in the insurance industry that spanned over fifty years, during which time she became the first woman in the Roanoke Valley to achieve the CPCU (Certified Casualty and Property Underwriter) designation. She taught Sunday School at Southview United Methodist Church for many years as well as insurance classes for various groups including fire service investigators. Her main priority, however, was always her five children. The family would like to thank Amdeisys Hospice Care for their kind and compassionate care and support during the last few weeks. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society 2840 Electric Road Suite # 106 Roanoke, Virginia 24018 designated for lung cancer research. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday, April 18, 2013 at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road by Pastor Larry Edmonds. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Simpson Funeral Home. 366-0707
