I am so sorry for your loss. The Bible gives us the wonderful prospect of seeing our loved ones again on a paradise earth. At Psalms 37:9-11 & 29, it gives us the hope of living forever on a paradise earth. It will be a time when Isaiah 33:24 will take place and “no resident will say ‘I am sick.” On this paradise earth, Rev. 21:4 promises us that “death will be no more.” I know this may not relieve your deep grief at this time, but please take faith in God’s promises.

To Chips Family: It was with deep regret that we read of Chip's death. It was our priviledge and pleasure to have worked with Chip for a number of years, primarily thru the Virginia Synod. He fought the good fight and will be greatly missed. Our prayers for your comfort and support during this time. Betty and Jim Wilson

Pastor Chip visited Apostles in Gloucester for All Saint's just a few weeks ago. His preaching was so inspiring and memorable. His warm smile will always be in my heart. I have included a photo I took of his that day.

The news of Chip's death has hurt me more deeply than I can ever find words to describe. It was my privilege to serve as cantor of St. Philip Church when he was pastor. The congregation there adored him and I loved him deeply. I am so grateful that we had kept in touch by email and a few visits after we went our separate ways geographically. My heart is with Kris, Sarah, and Anna at this indescribably difficult time. May his memory live on and on. Goodbye Chip, my friend

We'll miss you Chip. I feel so blessed to to have known you, even if it was briefly at youth events or when you were visiting my home church, Messiah. You were a great person who is still loved by many. Whenever you were around there was a warmness and people gravitated to you, including me. You will be missed greatly by many. Farewell and peace to you Chip.

My heart was filled with great sadness on learning of Rev. Gunsten's death. Although, I only met him one time and that was at our church, the young people used to talk about him fondly. I knew he was a great pillar in the church. I don't know why I am so moved, but my heart is grieving for his family, friends and the church.

On behalf of Chip's many friends at Messiah Lutheran (Mechanicsville), and my wife and I, please accept our sincerest sympathy at your loss. No words could contain the love that we will continue to have for Chip. He was a true servant leader and brother in Christ. The light of Christ shined through his life brightly, and we trust it holds him in its care now. Chip will be sorely missed by us, always remembered and loved. Please let us know if we can be of any service. We will be praying for you all. Christ's peace, The Rev. Louis Florio, Pastor, Messiah (Mechanicsville)

Kris and family, our hearts grieve with you. The Gunsten family has always been special to us going back to the times at Grace Winchester. Jim and Chip and I worked so well together at Grace. Chip's gentle spirit always inspired me. I last saw him we he preached at St. Mark Charlottesville and I was visiting, not knowing he was preaching. What a great reconnection and I still remember the essence of his sermon: "You came today looking for God didn't you?" We remember helping you to move into your house in Winchester and the kids at our house. What great memories. Chip left his mark so widely in the church. What a witness. He is very special. We had traded emails lately about getting together in Harrisonburg. We WILL be getting together...just not in Harrisonburg. Praise God for Chip's life. The world was a better place because Chip lived here. Please know that we are so sorry and hold you in our hearts and in our prayers.

My heart is very heavy today with great sadness in hearing about Chip's death. He has been a mentor to me in my continued process of discernment over the past two years. He has encouraged me along the way. He was there at the beginning to hand me the application packet for ministry. He met my children and husband and he always asked me about them whenever I saw him. The last time I saw him was a short while ago at a leadership conference and he embraced me as we said good-bye and asked me, as always, about my family. Chip had an infectious personality and he has greatly impacted my life in my call to ministry. I will miss him and I will carry him with me as I continue my education and then move on toward my call as a Diaconal Minister. My life forever changed knowing him and I am forever grateful. Please accept my deepest condolences for your loss. I can only imagine all of the beautiful memories you all have of him. He will forever rest in peace now. With love, Christine Roe

My prayers are with his family. He was an awesome pastor and helped me through my divorce by his presence and caring nature. He also baptized my daughter. Though I've not seen him recently,he will be missed. Mom ,Barbara Simpson , kept me informed on his illness.
